There seems to be this stereotype that women who are fit, strong, independent and into sports…especially martial arts can’t be feminine. Why is that? I love martial arts, I love to beat the crap out of people and I love to look like a lady! This stereotype can augment already serious stereotypes about women and fitness. It is okay to want to be tough, to be strong, to lift weights and to “work out like a guy”! Just because you work out like a dude or you work out with a dude….does not mean you have to look like one!
I am an avid fan of fitness as part of my overall concept of “independence”. I believe everyone (man or woman) should be able to care for themselves and that means hard work, whether it is learning how to make sure you invest your money correctly OR learning how to defend yourself if you are attacked while getting into your car. It means being able to change your tire on a dirt road when your cell phone doesn’t work so you are not stranded or having enough stamina to lift something heavy or walk a long distance!
I can be an independent woman, a “butt kicker”, a gear head, a financial planner, a weight lifter, a gym rat and still maintain my femininity! I have a lot of friends who don’t care about femininity…it is not high on their list and I respect that! I have a lot more friends though, that use it as an excuse to not try something new….to avoid stepping out of their comfort zones and learning skills that will help make them “strong” in so many different ways…..
I have created a site for women like me! Anyone who loves to be tough, tenacious and girly! There are great links to sites for female martial artists and those who want to get physically fit. You can also find a link to my wontoughcookie store where you can find great apparel that will let you flaunt the fact that you are tough and sexy. Check out my sites, think about my blog and let me know what you think! Right or wrong, the first step to “being strong” is saying what you think!
